Are you a fan of the Hikaru No Go anime or the Hikaru No Go manga? Well, I’ve been reading it online and rewatching the anime streaming on Netflix lately and I was thinking I better write a post up about it. Since, you know, I don’t have anything to do right now.
So, the biggest question you might have is how do you play Go, the game that Hikaru plays, online? Because, I honestly had this question and there was no resources out there to point me in the right direction since you know, Go is pretty hard to play and most of the stuff out there isn’t very beginner friendly.
The best thing to do is start with the “Play Go” tutorial. Do EVERY problem and then look into something called KGS Go. KGS Go is a browser based game that lets you play Go against the computer and online without having to install a ton of software (it’s Java based). To get started, go visit the website then sign in (type your username in then click “Guest”). You’ll get some instructions for registering, if you want to you can go ahead and do that, but whatever.
Then you’re pretty much in the interface. At the top click “Play Go” and you’ll be set pretty much to play go against the Go A.I. (the robot) or humans or both. If you register, your rating will be saved and you can keep up with your stats.There are other free online go servers (Go Baduk Weigqi) but the Kiseido Go Server (KGS Go Server) is the best for engline players. Don’t be afraid, the different between Hikaru Go No (I mean Hikaru No Go XD) and real Go may be huge and lightning might not go down each time you play, but you’ll be having fun in no time.
Even if you’ve never even heard of Go before, this is a great chance to experience what most people call the “Best board game of all time” and “Most popular board game of all time”.
