Gurren-Lagann’s plot is actually deeper then you’d think. It’s actually mimicking the various famous mecha shows during 70s, 80s, 90s, and what we assume to be late 90s. Take a look at the first arc. You have Kamina, who is a massive badass who is unstoppable. The more ridiculous stuff happens and everyone is the better for it. Very much like the first super robot shows out there where the heroes were unstoppable and the robots did the most amazing yet illogical things out there.
Then, with Kamina’s death, we see the more story drive, hot bloodiness of the 80s with a the trend of more emotional pilots who are powered by only their pain. This leads to where we are now, the early 90s mecha anime. Suspension of disbelief is gone, robots carry guns and regular weaponry. The insane looking ganmen are gone and replaced with mass produced versions of mecha created as a defense force.
Hot bloodiness is gone, only pain and emotion are left. Hot bloodiness only comes rarely towards a fight at the end of the episode, kind of like Neon Genesis Evangelion. From the prologue of episode one, we notice that it looks more like the late 90s and onwards shows like GaoGaiGar and Goddnanar which pay tribute to the previous incarnations of anime and only focus purely on massive space battles against insurmountable odds with burning justice making a large comeback.
With this, we can see that the plot is actually very thought out, unlike some of Gainax’s shows where they go episode by episode. Leaving errors and budget shortages throughout the series.
Another look at how the various arcs play out is that with each arc, the focus of Simon increases. In the first arc he only seen what would be like a country. With the second arc, the world. Now with the third he influences the galaxy. Given the prologue, he will be within the universe.
I’m not sure what to expect for the upcoming episodes, other then what the spoilers provide. I do know, however, the the last 5 or so episodes are using the majority of the budget. That can only mean one thing: massive awesomeness.

Hi, I’m Chewy
I found your thoughts on Gurren lagann very interesting.
I always felt there was something more to the mecha theme in Gurren lagann too but couldn’t put my finger on it (probably due to my lack of super robot anime viewing experience)
I’d love to talk/discuss it over mail if that’s okay with you.
ciao
