It started coming out in 2007 and finally finished in 2008 with seven full episodes in an OVA style. So let’s do a review and then talk about it afterwards along with give the ending to the Freedom anime.

The basic story behind Freedom is that Earth got a giant space station dropped on it by faulty space station mechanics or something and the Moon base is like woah. Then they stop talking to Earth, Earth is all f’d up, and humanity is only located on the Moon or so the Moon people think. A kid finds a picture from a rocked launched from the Moon and goes on a mission to gain his freedom.

That’s the plot. Here is a quick, dirty, review of it:

The animation is still really good even now in 2009. The computer generated graphics are great. The product placement is stupid. The story is good if you throw out the fact it has no science in it. Watch it if you like planetes but don’t bother to even put it on planetes’s level.

Now if you haven’t seen it you can stop reading unless you want to know what happens.

Alright, so the kid finds the picture and sets out to go to Earth to meet the girl. The moon people of “Eden” don’t want him to go to Earth so they all try to block his way and he makes it to an escape pod. He lands in Nevada and heads towards Flordia. He gets there, meets the girl, they rebuild the Apollo rocket and then go back to the Moon. He fights against the Moon’s government to launch “Freedom” which is a Mar’s colonization rocket series that has enough stuff on it to rebuild Earth. The end.

Now I don’t like it, even for 7 episodes, when the story can be put into a single paragraph. Not to mention the following glaring problems:

• None of the technology is explained. How does the Moon have so much energy?
• Why does the Moon care about people finding their way to Earth? Seriously, it’s explained that they don’t want to repeat the same mistakes as before but come on. It’d be in the best interests of Eden to setup their own base there to get fresh water and food.
• Why can the survivors not rebuild society yet can rebuild rockets?

Not to mention pacing issues, a lack of focus on character development, and a hero who has no possible depth beyond “THERE IS A PRETTY GIRL I AM GOING TO EARTH TO SEE HER THEN I AM BRINGING HER HOME HO HO HO”.

Well, what can I say though it’s an ok anime. It’s just something to zone out and watch instead of pay detailed attention to.

Oh and here is something. I couldn’t find the last episode for awhile and there wasn’t anywhere online to read about the ending so I’m going to spoil the ending:

The kid and the girl make it to the Moon and are arrested. They break out and Kazuma is now like super security elite officer. He works to fight against them launching Freedom (the Mar’s colonization rockets) until all of the bikers and all of the people hard together to get them off the Moon. They succeed, fire the rockets, and then in the end you see the Earth being rebuilt and everyone happy.

Is that so hard for someone to type out on the Internet?

Oh and Cup Noodles < Pizza Hut. I’m sorry to say this but it’s so stupid when people keep shvoing Cup Noodles into your face instead of just casually eating pizza. ALL HAIL PIZZA HUT, ALL HAIL PIZZA HUT, ALL HAIL PIZZA HUT, ALL HAIL PIZZA HUT.

Long live the Pizza Hut regime. Maybe if the moon people had some pizza they wouldn’t be so uptight about things.
