Too Much Anime This Season

Backlog is filling up, but I’m going to dedicate some time this weekend to catching up. I hate posts like this because they are like “man I’m too lazy to do anything” but with the massive amount of good anime this season, just wow.

Compared to last spring, just wow. I think Ouran and Haruhi were the only winners out of last spring that I can remember off the top of my head. This season, not only the three shounen jump shows but we’ve also got Hayate, Gurren-Lagann, Nanoha, Seirei no Moribito, and a few more we also have prospects of a few more showing up to be good.

Come on Japan, release good anime all year long, not in one big burst!

Easter Downtime

More updates on some current season anime to come soon after Easter is over. I want to get a few words in on Teppen though:

AMAZING

TO THE LAST

WOW

Spring Season Changes

euphieee.jpg

First off, free Euphie AIM Icon! No clue who the artist of the original image is is as I found it on 4chan, but yeah! I cropped it, I think it turned out pretty well. Great when your friends are first watching Code Geass then they’re like isn’t that Euphie… and you’re like 8)

There will be a few changes around here during the spring anime season:

  • Episode reviews will contain between 3 and 24 screenshots depending on the quality of the episode and the series. For instance, Busou Renkin gets 9 while One Piece gets 6 and Code Geass gets 12. As I tweak the site, more and more screenshots become easier to upload although I don’t want to do too many.

Catchup

Time to play a little catch up:

Since I started working on the new stuff, I kind of left things hanging around busou renkin 18 (a month ago). Here is our new focus:

Info on new eps of Busou Renkin, Gintama, Code Geass, and Nodame for NOW. We’ll expand from here.

Reviews of older anime.

We’ll start at Geass 21 and Busou Renkin 23 I belive.

Move to Apis Networks

With a heart felt goodbye, I leave Dreamhost and join Apis Networks to host this blog (which doesn’t generate THAT much traffic for this post to matter). Dreamhost gives you a TON of bandwidth and a TON of well, everything else. Features, utility, speed, and all of that is wrapped together. The one thing they don’t give… relability.

It’s no joke that Dreamhost oversells. They oversell like mad. You get what you pay for, 20 bucks for a TB of xfer a month for 12 months is insane. My 12 months ends in June, but Apis has a special going on giving 25% off. Might as well get in while the deal is hot.

I’m going to be sticking with Dreamhost for my domain host, it’s only 10 bucks a year and they’re reliable in that aspects, but with everything good I’ve heard about apis, I might as well move on over. It’s 40 a year for nearly the perfect plan for me. If I go over then hopefully I’ll generate enough reveanue to afford some kind of monster hosting, but until then I’ll be content with Apis.

Speaking of them, a few words of praise should these words find themselves to a search engine somewhere and someone looking for a comment or two, so far the support has been great. I got quick answers on AIM and the forums where I found the deal, I’ve got tons of bandwidth, and well lots of other goodies in this really REALLY awesome control panel.

Ahh well, new host and news CMS and a few new things coming soon.

Switch to Wordpress

Yes, it’s true. I have abandoned my beloved Drupal and switched to Wordpress. There are many reasons why, of course, most involving just how frustrated I was at trying to Drupal to look decent.

It’s always been known that this is an anime blog and it’s always been known that I’ve had an amazingly hardcore interest into CMS software. Drupal, as a CMS, was amazing. It had nearly everything you could ever want out of a CMS. Flexibility, modular addons, extensive theming system, and more. The only problem was that, well, the flexibility was like taking wheat and running it through a pasta machine. It was hard. It was possible… but it was hard.

I’m not a man of originality, I can’t design a complete theme from scratch and integrate into software that has a reliance on certain CSS tags hardcoded in. I’m sure SOMEONE out there can tell me how or why I’m wrong with a giant long essay, but I’m sure they’d agree for a site that is just nothing more then a few static pages and discussion about new anime episodes that Wordpress is superior.

Actually, updating Drupal was a pain. Sure, it was simple. Create Content -> Add Story -> Type it out. The problem came with adding images, doing any kind of formating, or well yeah. I compare Wordpress vs. Drupal kind of like Pre-Commercial Invision Board and phpBB. Invision Board came with EVERYTHING out of the box you’d ever need, outside of the major mods. Easy to theme, easy to manage, and almost every feature vB had. phpBB came barebones, with only as many features as a forum should have, but was a framework for whatever you wanted (security problems aside).

I dreaded posting an update, only to know I’d have to fiddle with things for awhile to get it to work.

Now, let me stress this, these problems were mostly MY fault. I was using an already created theme with some heavy modifications on my end. Had I sat down and done my own theme from scratch with how I plan on my content to show up and had I sat down and set Drupal up from the ground up then yeah, I’d have no problems. Actually, if I didn’t get about 50-100 visitors a day compared to what Drupal is designed for (a few thousand) then yeah.

I want to give the Drupal team credit for one thing: making an awesome CMS that does exactly what a CMS should do, manage content. If I needed a large scale CMS, I’d defiantly go with Drupal. If I didn’t have such small needs, like just the ability to tinker with the theme or post Orange-kun screenshots, then I’d probably set out the time to mess with Drupal. As it is though, it’s too encompassing for my needs.

The backlash from the move is that most all content except the REALLY old stuff was moved over during the Drupal to Wordpress migration (move). I used RSS feeds to export the as many posts as I could get and manually moved a few things over. You’re going to get a few google 404s until they do few more crawls (and it’s probably going to DESTROY my rankings). I’ll accept this if it means it’s easier to add fresh content instead of sitting there all apathic about how the theme doesn’t look as good.

Since the ability to update the blog has been simplified, I should get back to adding more content quicker. Like covering new episodes of a few anime I like a lot, etc. The reviews of old series will continue, assuming I take the time out (lol 30 minutes) to write them.

Theme Changes

Nothing much to report, fixed up the theme some. Was debating switching to Wordpress but it didn’t do everything I wanted it to do so yeah. I’m still working on a new theme and some more new things. The personal problems are working out so I’ll have some free time soon to do more.

Affilate

Right now we are accepting affiliates. Affiliates are basically a fancy way of a link exchange. You give us a link and we give you a link back.

Why would you want to do it? Don’t know, I guess to share traffic between two websites? Personally I don’t mind, I think link buttons are quite stylish and look rather good. I have one somewhere around here, but eh I’d have to go find it and link it up and all that.

Anyway just use that contact form to send me a message and I’ll get back to you. Your site needs to be somewhat complete, somewhat interesting, and be related to anime, gaming, or something.

I mean, if you had a website about horses, I don’t think horse fans want to see anime and anime fans want to see horses.

By the way, the topsite things there? Yeah, they don’t work. I’ve got 15 visitors from only one of them. I will tell you what though, they are kind of pretty. Although the one with Naruto is pretty ehh.

By the way, I make no promises of traffic or anything like that or a really cool button or whatever.

Upgrading the Site

I’m currently upgrading the website along with the theme (Codename Geass is alright, but it had too much ehh naiveness in it and not enough professionalism). So you may see some default generic themes rotate through along with a few bugs and 404s. Within a few days it should all clean up as I sort out things.

Drupal is really an amazing pieces of CMS software and I love it to bits and pieces. I’m still learning everything about it, but slowly, slowly am I mastering it.

New Theme: "Codename Geass"

The website’s theme has changed to something I like to call “Codename Geass”. Why name it that? Because I want to. Anyway, the design is simplistic in that it’s two-tone (black and white) and has abunch of pretty colors like purple and dark blue and orange that go well with both white and black.

If you are curious to who the characters are, the guy in the header is from Ouran (no clue who I just have a screenshot of him and he’s pretty cool). The guy on the sideblocks is Zero from Code Geass. The girl at the bottom is from Shana but once again I don’t remember her name.

Oh, and that is Orange-kun announcing the latest news.
